Veggies or Weeds?

This summer’s top question is, “How do I tell the weeds from my vegetables?” Indeed, there’s nothing like going away on vacation and coming back to a garden totally filled with unknown plants i.e. weeds and veggies all tangled together. For some gardeners this can be so discouraging they just give up. Please keep at it, because if you give up now, you’ll never have the satisfaction of bringing home your very own squash, tomatoes, peppers, and more.

My favorite recommendation is to sort out the weeds from the veggies, then put down a thick layer of straw mulch. The weeds don’t have a chance after that, and the veggies are easy to spot. But, even if the weeds take over, vegetable plants are hardy. Just yesterday I poked through a weedy garden and found two zucchinis ready to eat, cucumbers on the way, and even a few beans. Enjoy your harvest!
