Hurricane Sandy has showed us just how powerful Nature can be.
Except for some downed trees and no electricity, we were not effected here at the Pratt Nature Center. Sandy has changed the lives of our Neighbors and Friends on the coast of Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.
Many of you may not know or may not even be able to believe I was born and raised in New York City. I would ride my bike to Shea Stadium, into Brooklyn and out to Rockaway Beach. We didn’t even have a tree, our neighbors did. So when we heard a local Staten Island Resident was collecting donations in her garage we offered to help. We just finished help load the truck with the enormous amount of donations that have been collected. They are headed to a distribution center as you read.
On Monday night when I first posted that we were collecting for Staten Island , a personal plea was texted to me from an old high school friend. “Please help my daughter Lindsey’s Street, They need help.” So after getting in touch with Lindsays Mother. Dr. D, her son, my boys and I headed to Oceanbreeze, Staten Island with my truck full of items specific to the needs of that neighborhood.
What I found interesting as I drove through all of the devastation was that I had to stop my car to let a large flock of wild Turkeys walk passed. Yes, Wild Turkeys. Apparently that part of the island has an overpopulation of wild turkeys. They walk on your car and into your house. They had made it through the storm. Nature is resilient!
Please continue to drop items off at the Pratt Nature Center. New Milford is such a giving Communtiy. We will continue to keep you updated on the changing needs. I will be heading back to Oceanside Ave. soon to help out the neighborhood. I also hope to visit the Preschool class with specific donations of goods and to provide them with a little Pratt presentation.
