Thank you Joanne for posting about your garden. It’s so interesting to see how each plot is progressing. Everyone has their own favored plants, and planting patterns. Squash and tomatoes seem to be popular. Personally, I like beans and more beans, along with tomatoes, brussel sprouts, and kale. I am trying spaghetti squash for the first time, and sweet pumpkins again after managing to bake a stunning pie last Thanksgiving with one from my garden. Also, I am continually amazed by the hardiness of plants and seeds, even after being subjected to cold, rain, heat, weeds, and drought. That urge to grow just can’t be stopped!

Week 11!!Heavy rains did not cause any damage but the powdery mildew has spread. I haven’t been able to use my milk spray on it the last few visits due to an extremely high number of bumblebees doing their business in the garden. They especially like the pumpkin plant. Unfortunately if I can’t get near it to trim the bad leaves and spray, the pumpkins may not make it. Will try on the next rainy day!
Carrots are almost ready – they are about 1 inch across on the top.
Did a third planting of carrots today (second planting never germinated). And started a small arugula and kale garden for baby greens. The first kale plants never took off after being eaten!
Tomatoes are all borderline for ripening. I hear this is a problem in our area. As an experiment I took one large tomato that had a red streak in it to ripen on the counter. I hope to be able to compare the taste to another that has ripened on the plant.
Many other gardens had success with their cucumbers. I planted mine from seed and tried to trellis it. There are many flowers but no successful cucumbers yet (one small one that hasn’t grown larger in over a week). It gets plenty of water so I’m hopeful those pesky bumblebees will do their job!!
