Edible Plant Foraging with The 3 Foragers

Join The 3 Foragers as they point out local foraging opportunities here at Pratt and share a wealth of knowledge around identifying, harvesting and preparing native and invasive wild plants.
The 3 Foragers are a family from southern Connecticut who hunt, identify, photograph, create recipes, and teach wild edible plants and fungi.

Their recently published book “Adventures in Edible Plant Foraging: Finding, Identifying, Harvesting, and Preparing Native and Invasive Wild Plants” is just one tool they use and share with wild food enthusiasts.

This program is for adults and free (donations appreciated) but online preregistration is required. Participants should dress for the weather. In the event it is necessary to cancel, participants will be emailed and an announcement will be posted to our Facebook page.

October Walk and Talk: A Community Conversation

Special Guests:

Kerry Gold, Dining Service Director at Unidine Corporation for New Milford Hospital  a Planetree Hospital. Kerry is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America with three decades of experience in food service operations. Kerry’s focus is on sustainable practices and fresh food made from scratch from fresh ingredients.

Cynthia Tyler RN, OCN, CBCN has worked at the Diebold Family Cancer Center since 2007. She is an Oncology Certified Nurse and Certified Breast Care Nurse. As a designated nurse navigator who understands many aspects of cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship issues, she assists and educates patients, clarifies important information and connects them with resources during and after treatments. Cynthia educates about cancer awareness, prevention and screening.

Michele MacDonnell RDN, CDN is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who currently works for Unidine at New Milford Hospital with the Plow to Plate Program.  Michele sees inpatients and provides outpatient nutrition counseling at the hospital, teaches the Diabetes Education classes and nutrition and cooking classes for cancer prevention, survivorship, and weight management.  Michele recently received a certificate in training for Pediatric weight management.  As a working mother of 2, Michele can give practical tips for easy, healthy meals as well as tips for picky eaters and strategies to get your kids to eat more vegetables.

Cindy, Kerry and Michele work together for New Milford Hospital’s cancer survivor-ship program “Let’s Get Cooking”, which is a quarterly cooking class that focuses on the benefits of a plant based diet as well as New Milford Hopsital’s “Eating Well” program that provides meal vouchers and nourishing foods for patients undergoing cancer treatment at the Diebold Family Cancer Center.

*Following the walk there will be a discussion on the benefits of fermented foods, with some sampling and a hands on demo of how to make Kimchi. Participants will be making their own batch of kimchi to take home.

The Pratt Nature Center, in collaboration with New Milford Hospital’s Plow to Plate Program,  continues the monthly “Walk and Talk: A Community Conversation” series for families and individuals. We’ll be joined on our short stroll through the beautiful lower fields of Pratt by different professionals and community leaders as our special guests each month. Our guest speakers come from all walks of life such as fitness, medicine, mental health, education, substance abuse prevention, nutrition, farming, veterinary practice, politics and more.  This is a great opportunity to hear about our community from different perspectives, ask questions and learn from each other.

Pratt’s Great Family Campout – October

Friday, October 26th @ 4:00 pm to Saturday, October 27th @ 10:00 am

An event so nice, we’re doing it twice! By popular demand, our Family Campout is back for a second round.

Spend the night as a family outside and under the stars at Pratt’s Great Family Campout! We’ll provide the fire, the marshmallows and a night stroll around the lower fields while you bring your camping supplies, food and an adventurous spirit.

Our campout begins on the evening of Friday, October 26th by arriving at Pratt anytime after 4:00 pm. Set up your tent and settle in for a night of family fun. We’re only supplying the marshmallows so please plan to bring your own dinner and snacks. Wood campfires will be provided for anyone that wants to cook over an open flame. Water and bathrooms will be available on site.

Spend the rest of the evening enjoying the views on the property and enjoying the company of family and friends. Pratt staff will lead a night stroll through the lower fields for anyone interested. Finish off the evening by roasting marshmallows around the campfire before settling in for a great night’s sleep under the stars. In the morning, campfires will be going for making breakfast and coffee. 

This is a family event meant to be a classic camping experience. To stay true to that expectation and for safety, there a few things that can’t be part of the Great Family Campout.

Please leave the following at home, as they are not allowed at this event:

-No alcohol or tobacco products (including e-cigarettes or similar devices).

-No firearms or weapons of any kind.

-No pets.

-No propane tanks or charcoal (wood fires will be provided)

-No amplified music (meaning that it can be heard outside of your tent).

-No generators.

This is an all ages, family event. Space is limited, please be sure to register early! The cost is $10 per family and online pre registration is required by Wednesday, October 24th.

October Full Moon Hike

Friday, October 26th, 2018 @ 8:00 pm

Come stroll the lower fields with us for a twilight hike. Weather permitting, we’ll finish with a campfire and roast marshmallows! *This hike is during our October Great Family Campout. All are welcome on our hike, even if your family isn’t participating in the campout. 

No registration required, all ages welcome!

Pratt’s Pumpkin Party

For children with special needs, their family and friends.

Saturday, October 27th 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Join us for an afternoon of fall fun!  Pumpkin carving,  slightly spooky campfire stories,  music with Bear Claw Academy of Music. Costumes are optional.  Please bring your own pumpkins, carving tools and some finger foods to share .

All ages welcome. This event is free but donations are always welcome. Registration is not required but appreciated to let us know you’re coming. Click here to register.

Archery Afternoon

For children currently in Grades 3-5

Monday, October 29th 4:15 pm – 5:30 pm

Join Pratt’s certified archery instructors for an amazing fall afternoon of basic archery instruction! Kids will be introduced to the parts of a bow, coached through proper technique and get plenty of opportunity to hit that bullseye. Space is limited to 10 participants.

Busing from Sarah Noble Intermediate School is available, parent drop offs should arrive at 4:15.

$15 per child, online pre registration is required.

Fire Building

For children currently in Grades 3-5

Tuesday, November 6th 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

What’s better than a campfire during the fall in New England? One that you made yourself! Kids will learn different methods for building a fire, what materials to collect and how to use traditional methods to spark a flame. Each participant will work to make their own fire in a supervised but completely hands on experience. We’ll finish with roasting marshmallows over the open fire!

*Remember, New Milford Public Schools are closed on November 6th

$15 per child, online pre registration is required. Space is limited, register early!

Wine, Women and Wreaths

Enjoy a Ladies’ Night at the Pratt Nature Center making your own holiday wreath in our festive greenhouse. We’ll supply the wire, necessary tools, pine boughs and some decorations as well as the wine, cheese and crackers! You bring your friends, any decorations you have been accumulating over the years and your festive spirit.  (Extra glue guns are always helpful!) Go home with a beautiful wreath just in time for holiday decorating!

$45.00 members/$50.00 non members

This is an adult only event and preregistration is required. You can register as an individual or have one person register your entire group.  Space is limited, register early!

Family Wreath Making

Sunday, November 25th 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Drop in to make a holiday wreath with the family! We’ll have everything you’ll need in our festive greenhouse to put your basic wreath together along with some decorations. If you have your own decorations, feel free to bring them too!
